From Lathes and Lenses: A Celebration of Woodturning and Photography

Members of the Southwest Wisconsin Photography Club (SWPC) and the Harry Nohr Woodturners Club (HNWC) will be displaying artwork during their join exhibit “From Lathes and Lenses: A Celebration of Woodturning & Photography” on display at Rountree Gallery from June 30 – July 25, 2010. Come meet these talented artists at the Artists’ Reception on Sunday, July 11 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

These two clubs were both organized in October of 2008, and continue to meet monthly. Members of SWPC meet to share their monthly shooting “assignments”, share and discuss images, listen to presenters on topics of interest, and informally share information on equipment, image manipulation tips, and shooting locations. SWPC provides a great opportunity for area shutterbugs to share their passion and learn from one another. Members of HNWC also meet monthly to share ideas and techniques, trade wood, and conduct demonstrations. HNWC is the 300th Chartered Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, and acts as a mechanism to bring together people from all backgrounds to enjoy and learn the art and craft of woodturning. For more information on these clubs, please visit our webpage where there are detailed descriptions, web links, and contact information available.

In conjunction with their exhibit, the clubs are offering these free activities:  The Harry Nohr Woodturners Club will be operating two woodturning lathes and demonstrating woodturning techniques during Heritage Day festivities on July 4 at the Platteville Museum complex. Members will be turning wooden tops to give to youngsters, and also demonstrating bowl turning techniques. There will be experienced wood turners on hand to answer questions, as well. The Southwest Wisconsin Photography Club (SWPC) invites you to join them for an informal discussion about photography and SWPC, on Saturday, July 24 from 1:00-3:30 at Rountree Gallery. A number of photographers will share their favorite images along with the techniques used to make them. There will be ample time for questions and discussions. Light refreshments will be offered. For more information please visit our webpage.

Rountree Gallery’s Summer Hours are Wednesday – Friday & Sunday from 12:00 – 4:30 and Saturday from 10:00 – 4:30.

3-D Photography and Beyond by David J. Meinhardt

Put on your free 3-D glasses and joyfully enter the world of 3-D Photography and Beyond.  Be amazed at 3-D Anaglyph images and stereopticon cards. Marvel as 3-D “Phantograms” mysteriously rise up from the flat page, a magical pseudo hologram, candy for your eyes that will bring out the wonder of your soul and put a smile on your face.  Artist David J. Meinhardt offers you this experience and more at Rountree Gallery from July 28 – August 29. Refresh yourself at the Artist Reception on Sunday, August 1 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., where you can meet David, have some food and punch, see his 3-D camera rig, and talk about all things 3-D.  The month-long exhibit also showcases David’s work in Infrared, whimsical and social commentary photography, as well as, multi-media installation art pieces, and maybe a poem or two.

David is a fourth generation artist. His great-grandfather did carvings and design, his grandfather was a commercial artist and designer, and his mother was a water color artist. David’s creative endeavors entail poetry, installation art, photography, and audio/video production.

Michael J. Smith, Artist of the Month

Throughout the month of July, Rountree Gallery’s Artist of the Month display at Clare Bank in Platteville will be featuring the artwork collection of Michael J. Smith.

Michael is a lifelong resident of the driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin, and currently resides in Mineral Point. He has been interested in photography his entire life, and remembers taking photographs as a child. As he grew, and his interest in the outdoors expanded, Michael began to study the technical aspects of photography. As he gradually learned the technical part of photography, Michael began to realize a creative side of himself that he never knew existed. The natural world is a true inspiration to Michael, and spending time with Mother Nature is what drives him to create photographs to share the magnificent outdoor world with others. You can see more of Michael’s artwork at Rountree Gallery’s exhibit “From Lathes and Lenses: A Celebration of Woodturning and Photography” on display June 30 – July 25 and at his website www.magiclightphotography.com.

Michael invites you to see a sampling of his artwork at Rountree Gallery’s Artist of the Month display at Clare Bank, located at 345 West Pine Street, Platteville.

Sculptural Mobile at Heritage Day

Sculpture Mobile Created at Heritage Day

Rountree Gallery hosted an art activity during last weekend’s Heritage Day festivities held at the Rollo Jamison & Mining Museum complex on July 4, 2010 in Platteville, WI.  Rountree Gallery invited visitors to lend a hand in the creation of a sculptural mobile. Nancy Collins of Platteville (pictured left) assisted over 60 participants in coloring and creating pieces that were suspended off of a wire sculpture that she designed. This project was made possible by a generous donation from the Platteville Optimist Club. The finished sculptural mobile is currently on display at Rountree Gallery. Summer Hours are Wednesday-Friday and Sunday from 12:00-4:30 and Saturday 10:00-4:30.
