Solid Waste & Recycling

 The City provides solid waste & recycling services for 1 and 2 family dwellings only. This service is on a weekly basis.   Those streets east of Second Street or Rountree Avenue are collected on Monday.  Second Street and Rountree Avenue and points west are collected on Tuesday.

Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance and Collection policies:

The weekly volume limit of solid waste is two 35 gallon containers per household and four 35 gallon containers per duplex. Please note: to avoid worker injury, container size is limited to 35 gallons; larger containers will not be emptied

  1. Trash bags are not required to be transparent.
  2. Trash containers are allowed to be along side the street beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the day prior to pickup and must be removed from the side of the street by 5:30 p.m. oon the day following collection.
  3. Residents that have extra waste can do one of the following: Purchase City of Platteville bags (available at City Hall, Heiser’s Hardware and Piggly Wiggly for $1.00 each); arrange for pick up with a solid waste contractor; or haul the waste to the drop site located at 1120 Broadway. Drop site hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  All the above options have additional costs assoicated with them.

Spring and Fall clean up policies for City of Platteville’s residents are as follows:

  1. Spring clean up will be held the Monday and Tuesday the week prior to the observed Memorial Day Holiday.
  2. Fall clean up will be held the Monday and Tuesday of the UW-P Homecoming week, unless Homecoming is in September, in which case the collection will take place the first Monday and Tuesday in October.
  3. The allowable limit for collection during the spring and fall cleanups will consist of a 4’ x 4’ x 10’ pile.
  4. Yard waste and scrap metal will not be counted in the volume limit, but must be placed in separate piles from solid waste.  Yard waste and scrap metal will be collected throughout the week by City crews.
  5. Small and loose items must be contained in bags and cans. The bags do not have to be transparent.

Items banned from regular weekly or clean up collections are as follows: appliances (washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, microwaves and water heaters), earth, sod, rocks, concrete, ashes, construction/remodeling or demolition materials, tires, engine oil, greases, fluids, and electronics (TVs, computer components, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, and DVRs).

Brush: Brush includes tree limbs and bushes less than 8” in diameter, but more than ½ inch and tree limbs and woody stems that are less than ½ inch, but are inconvenient to bag.

Brush pickup will continue to be during the weeks of the first and third Mondays of the month.

Yard waste shall include but are not limited to, grass clippings, holiday trees, leaves, brush clippings, branches less than ½ inch in diameter and less than 2 feet in length, weeds and garden debris.

Yard waste shall continue to be collected on Thursday for residents living east of Hwy 81 and on Friday for those living west of Hwy 81. Yard waste must be in City of Platteville bags except during the weeks of spring and fall clean up.
