Welcome to Platteville!
by David Berner, City Manager

Platteville, Wisconsin is nestled among the gently rolling hills of Southwestern Wisconsin. Surrounded by beautiful farm country, Platteville is home to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and its 7000 students.
Opportunities for business and recreation abound. Platteville has industrial sites located next to U.S. Highway 151, a 4-lane expressway that connects to major interstate highways from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The city also boasts an outstanding labor force coupled with a community that enthusiastically supports local  businesses and economic development.

The City is growing quickly, with increasing availability of new home building sites and commercial building sites. UW-P is in the second year of an ambitious expansion plan that will bring another 2,000 students to the community plus up to 135 new faculty and staff.

Extensive recreation and arts programs are available, ranging from soccer to museums, art galleries to flag football, with dozens of activities in between. The University presents numerous artistic and athletic endeavors for the public's enjoyment, often for free or at prices far less than in larger cities.

The future of Platteville, Wisconsin is bright with new housing developments, shopping centers and newly created job opportunities. Soon, a newly designed streetscape for downtown will help revitalize this important business hub of our community.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to our community whether as a citizen or as a guest...and we encourage you to bookmark this site as one of your favorites and check back often!

Platteville pARTicpate Retreat on Saturday, May 17th

On behalf of the Platteville Arts Board we would like to invite you to attend the upcoming pARTicipate Retreat on Saturday, May 17th from 9 am -1:00 pm at the Mound City Bank Motor Branch Conference Room. Attached is a copy of the invitation, agenda and the registration form.

You can RSVP by returning attached registration form to the Platteville Arts Board, PO Box 780, Platteville, WI 53818 - or by sending an email response with requested information to Gaile Schwickrath gaile@rinzai.com, or Heidi Dyas-McBeth at kealin@mhtc.net.

Please share this information with others involved with the organizations that you work with. This retreat is open to artists, arts and other organization administrators, board members and volunteers – basically all interested in supporting and growing the arts and culture of the Platteville community. Event is FREE and will feature a presentation by Arts Wisconsin, the WI Arts Board and the UWP Foundation. A copy of the “Arts in the Small Community” book will be provided to participating organizations (this is the revised and updated version of the original publication developed in the late sixties by Wisconsinite Robert Gard).

I am hoping for a nice representation from the various arts, cultural and community organizations in Platteville. As resources become scarcer it will be important to understand the mission of the community groups we are involved with and to discuss ways to partner and collaborate on projects – creating a vision for supporting and integrating the arts into all aspects of our community.

We hope to see you there!

1929 Platteville Journal Story About City Hall Dedication

On September 25, 1929 the Platteville Journal published a story about the dedication of the new Platteville Memorial City Hall. Take some time and look back to the great storytelling that the Platteville Journal has always been known for.  Check back often, as we will be adding more historical content to this very soon from the Platteville Journal files. A big thanks to the Platteville Journal and the Rollo Jamison Museum for these great materials!  Click here for a PDF file that will let you see the front page of the Journal in the year 1929.
