How to Run for Office

An election will be held in the City of Platteville on the first Tuesday in April to elect an Alderperson in a District or At Large, depending on current terms. If necessary, the primary will be held on the third Tuesday in February. The three year term for Alderperson will begin on the third Tuesday in April.​

In order to run for an Alderperson position in the City of Platteville, a candidate must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Citizen of the United States of America
  • 18 Years of Age or Older
  • Elector/Resident of the City of Platteville
  • Not a Convicted Felon (unless duly pardoned for the conviction)

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you must complete the following requirements:

  • Complete the Campaign Registration Statement - Form ETHCF-1
  • Completion of Declaration of Candidacy - Form EL-162
  • Complete the Nomination Papers for Nonpartisan Office - Form EL-169 

NOTE: At-Large Alderperson candidates must collect 50 (minimum) to 100 (maximum) signatures of qualified city electors.  Aldermanic District Common Council candidates must collect 20 (minimum) to 40 (maximum) signatures of qualified city electors from their district.

Nomination papers for Alderperson positions for the spring election may be circulated no sooner than December 1 preceding the election and may be filed no later than 5:00 PM on the first Tuesday in January preceding the election.  Emailed and faxed documents are not accepted. 

Alderperson positions on the ballot in Spring 2024:

  • District 3
  • District 4
  • At-Large
