Forestry

The mission of the Forestry Department is to manage Platteville's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations.  We have approximately 2000 trees located in cemeteries, parks, or public right-of-ways.  These trees provide a number of important benefits.  They help to raise property values, reduce energy costs, clean the air, reduce stormwater runoff, and sequester carbon.  If you would like to calculate the benefits from an individual tree we recommend the National Tree Benefit Calculator

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer or EAB is going to drastically change the urban forests in Platteville.  EAB is an invasive insect native to Asia.  Since its discovery in North America in 2002, EAB has killed untold millions of ash trees.  All native species of ash are susceptible including green ash, white ash, black ash, and blue ash.  In July of 2015 EAB was discovered in Kieler, WI.  Because ash trees often will not show symptoms until they have been infested for two or three years it is recommended to consider all ash trees with a 15 mile radius of a confirmed case as if they are also infested.  Right now homeowners have to start considering treating with insecticide or removing and replacing existing ash trees.  If choosing to replace please consider choosing a tree from our "Recommended Tree Planting List".  As ash trees start to come down it is important we replant using a greater diversity of species.  By not having any species dominate our urban forest we will be better able to cope with future pests, diseases, and climate changes.
