MADISON, WI, October 14, 2025 – Today in the Wisconsin State Assembly, distinguished first responders from across Wisconsin were recognized in a First Responder of the Year ceremony during the Assembly floor session. 2025 honorees were nominated by their peers and chosen by their respective legislators to receive the award.

Chief Doug McKinley of the Platteville Police Department has been named the 49th Assembly District’s 2025 First Responder of the Year. He was selected by Representative Travis Tranel (R–Cuba City), with the concurrence of State Senator Howard Marklein (R–Spring Green). Chief McKinley is a devoted husband and father who has faithfully served the residents of Platteville and Southwest Wisconsin for 35 years. Known for his commitment to community-based policing and steady, compassionate leadership, he has been a cornerstone of public safety in the region.

“It was an honor to welcome Chief McKinley and his family to the State Capitol for today’s ceremony recognizing his dedicated service to Southwest Wisconsin,” said Rep. Tranel. “This day honors not only outstanding first responders like Chief McKinley, but all who serve in fire, EMS, and law enforcement across our state. I congratulate Chief McKinley and thank him for all that he has done to help keep our communities safe.”

During his distinguished career, Chief McKinley rose through the ranks, serving as Officer in Charge, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and a Project Director of the Iowa-Grant Drug Task Force. For over 20 years, he has led the City of Platteville Police Department with integrity and dedication.

Under his leadership, the department underwent significant advancements, including the construction of a new police facility, a comprehensive rewrite of the department’s policy manual, and the successful achievement of full law enforcement accreditation twice. In March 2026, Chief McKinley will retire, leaving behind a lasting legacy built on a simple but powerful principle: doing the right thing, for the right reason.

The First Responder of the Year award was created in 2019 to recognize the brave men and women who serve in our emergency services. State representatives from each legislative district seek nominations from their communities and select one individual who best exemplifies community service, selflessness and dedication. The list of recipients from this year included police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and all levels of EMS personnel.

Along with providing each award recipient with a legislative citation recognizing their achievement, the state Assembly also passed a resolution declaring October 14th First Responders Appreciation Day.
