Prescribed Burns Possible At The University on April 6 and April 7

Based on weather conditions, the campus community may see and smell smoke and/or flames from Memorial Park, Monday, Apr. 6 and/or Tuesday, Apr. 7, as faculty and students of the Ecological Restoration and Resource Management (ECORES) and Environmental Sciences and Society (ESS) programs conduct prescribed burns.

Burns will be done only if conditions are “in prescription”:  the weather is correct to suppress or disperse smoke, keep ideal fire speeds, provide preferred moisture (dry enough to support a burn but not to create fire risk), and will not conflict with outdoor athletics.

As stewards of place in Southwest Wisconsin, UW-Platteville is proud to use this traditional land management tool which offers many ecological, economic, cultural, and practical benefits to our campus.  Campus prescribed burns are made possible through collaboration between Facilities Management, the Ecological Restoration and Resource Management program, and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Society.  Each prescribed burn provides hands-on experience for our students, helping build Wisconsin’s workforce capacity to care for our fire-dependent lands.  Funding for prescribed burn equipment is provided by the Student Research and Engagement Fund (SREF).
