Progress Continues on New Platteville Fire Facility — With Recognition to Partner Townships

Platteville, WI — Construction continues on the City of Platteville’s new fire facility, a major capital investment that will serve both city and township residents throughout the Platteville Fire Department Coverage District. Despite minor delays due to recent rainfall, site work remains on schedule. Utility lines and storm sewer systems are currently being finalized, with driveway and parking lot base infill expected to proceed once ground conditions permit. Footing and foundation construction is anticipated to begin by early July.

The City of Platteville wishes to express its appreciation to the partner Townships and the Township Taxpayers, that have contributed directly to this $14.5 million project. The Townships of Belmont, Elk Grove, Ellenboro, Harrison, Lima, Platteville, and Smelser collectively provided $1.4 million in shared-cost contributions. These funds represent a proportional allocation based on each township’s population and fire service coverage area.

This upfront investment helps the City of Platteville avoid additional debt issuance and associated interest costs. By reducing the need for further borrowing, the contribution preserves the City's limited debt capacity for future infrastructure priorities or emergency needs.

Cost-sharing was determined using a data-driven formula reflecting 2022 population estimates and service area coverage. The townships’ contributions are as follows:

  • Belmont: $79,228.09 (1.33%)
  • Elk Grove: $51,724.04 (0.87%)
  • Ellenboro: $87,027.75 (1.46%)
  • Harrison: $132,594.16 (2.22%)
  • Lima: $316,501.85 (5.30%)
  • Platteville Township: $623,151.51 (10.43%)
  • Smelser: $107,963.67 (1.81%)

The City of Platteville itself is contributing approximately $4.58 million, representing roughly 76.6% of the local cost.

Funding for the project is being supported through multiple sources:

  • $7,000,000 in Congressionally Directed Funding
  • $1,500,000 in donations
  • $5,977,000 in shared contributions from the City and participating Townships (local cost)

This partnership underscores the value of regional collaboration in delivering essential public safety infrastructure. Thanks you, again, to our Townships.
