City of Platteville Declares State of Emergency in Response to COVID-19

PLATTEVILLE, WI (March 19, 2020) – The City of Platteville has declared a state of emergency in response to the global COVID-19 outbreak.

Common Council President Barbara Daus signed the declaration put forth by City Manager Adam Ruechel on Tuesday, March 17, which will allow the city to be immediate in its response to this global pandemic.  The declaration, which went into effect immediately after signing, will be ratified by the Common Council at the March 24 meeting.

“The purpose of this declaration is not to scare residents,” Ruechel stated.  “It’s being proactive to the situation and will allow us to make sure we have the right tools to act quickly and responsibly to unfolding events.”

As a result of the declaration, the city will not have to wait for the Common Council’s authorization (which normally takes two weeks) to take action deemed necessary to protect the health and safety of the community.  City staff still fully intends to bring all other necessary items to the council for discussion and approval.

Although as of Wednesday Grant County has not had a confirmed case of the virus, the City encourages everyone to be aware of what is going on around the country and surrounding areas, and to follow CDC recommendations.
