City of Platteville Implements Mobile Food Vending Permit Requirement
PLATTEVILLE, WI — As of January 1, 2026, mobile food vendors operating within the City of Platteville are required to obtain a Mobile Food Vending Permit. The Platteville Common Council approved the new permitting requirement on December 9, 2025, establishing clear standards for mobile food operations within the city.
Under the ordinance, any person or business operating, conducting, or managing a mobile food establishment in Platteville must obtain a permit unless exempt under the Wisconsin DATCP Food Code. Exempt organizations include youth groups, churches, and service organizations. Permits are not required for private parties, picnics, or gatherings where the general public is not invited.
Permit fees are set through the City’s Official Fee Schedule. For 2026, the cost is $25 per day or $150 for an annual permit, valid through December 31, 2026. Each mobile food establishment must be permitted separately. Charitable organizations may request a waiver of permit fees. Questions regarding the permit may be directed to the City Clerk’s Office at (608) 348-9741 ext. 6.
The Mobile Food Vending Permit was created in response to a request from an event planner seeking a more structured approach to mobile food operations. The ordinance also includes a fire inspection requirement to ensure mobile food units comply with applicable fire prevention and safety standards.
Prior to the adoption of the ordinance, mobile food vendors were instructed to coordinate with the State of Wisconsin for food licensing, notify the Platteville Police Department, obtain permission from property owners, and arrange for waste and garbage disposal. The new permitting process consolidates these requirements into a consistent, citywide framework.
The permit is intended to provide clear expectations for mobile food vendors while supporting local businesses, event organizers, and the community. By requiring proper licensing, insurance, and compliance with food safety and fire safety standards, the ordinance promotes fair competition, public safety, and a positive experience for residents and visitors.
Additional information about the Mobile Food Vending Permit is available on the Mobile Food Vendor Permit web page at www.platteville.org/administration/page/mobile-food-vendor-permit.
