Casting an Absentee Ballot

Absentee voting by-mail is accessible to the public and safe. Absentee ballots will be mailed 20 days before the Spring Election and 47 days before a General Election. The current deadline to request a ballot by mail is 5:00 pm on the Thursday before the election by 5 PM, www.myvote.wi.gov also allows you to track the status of your ballot. Please request as soon as possible to ensure timely delivery.

All absentee ballots are sent to the polls to be counted on Election Day!

Application Method

In order to request an absentee ballot, you must first be registered to vote at your current address. Visit MyVote Wisconsin to check if you are registered or to register. Click here to view an informative video on how to request your absentee ballot.

  If you are registered, you may request a ballot:

  • Online - Visit MyVote Wisconsin and select Vote Absentee. Online requests can be made until the Thursday before the election by 5 PM. A valid Photo ID must be uploaded (See instructions below)
  • Clerk’s Office –  Absentee ballot request forms are available in the Clerk’s Office  A valid Photo ID must be presented.  No ballots may be taken from the Clerk’s Office. In-person absentee voting in the clerk's office is available no earlier than 14 days before the election between the hours of 8 AM and 4:30 PM. No ballots may be cast in the clerk's office on the Monday before the election. 
  • By Mail – Download the Absentee Ballot application (EL-121) and mail it to the City Clerk’s Office. The application, along with a valid Photo ID, must be received by the Clerk no later than 5 PM on the Thursday before an election in order for an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.
  • By Email - Provide a written request including: name, address registered at, address to mail ballot (if different), which election, your signature, and a valid photo ID

Note - Once a photo ID is provided, the elector no longer has to provide photo ID for subsequent absentee ballot requests, until they have an address or name change.

Indefinitely Confined Voters

Voters who are indefinitely confined, meaning they have a difficult time getting to the polls due to age, illness, infirmity, or disability, may request that a ballot be automatically sent to them for each election. Indefinitely confined voters do not need to provide a photo ID with their absentee ballot request.

Returning Absentee Ballot

*Note - The absentee ballot must be returned to the Clerk or District that it was issued from.

Your absentee ballot issued from the City of Platteville can be returned one of the following methods:

  • Mail it - The envelope has the Clerk's office address and the correct postage. Must be received on election day.
  • Bring it in - You can choose to deliver your ballot to the clerk's office. Must be delivered by 7:00 PM on election day.
  • Take it to the Polls - Must be delivered by 8:00 PM on election day to your polling location.

The completed absentee ballot must be received at your polling place by 8:00 PM on Election Day in order to be counted. Visit MyVote Wisconsin to track your returned ballot.

In accordance with a recent court ruling, BALLOTS CANNOT BE PLACED IN A DROP BOX, AND YOU CANNOT MAIL OR DELIVER A BALLOT FOR ANOTHER PERSON. Any Wisconsin voter who requires assistance with mailing or delivering their absentee ballot to the municipal clerk because of a disability must be permitted to receive such assistance by a person of the voter's choice, other than the voter's employer or agent of that employer or officer or agent of the voter's union.For more information click here.
