Platteville Housing Authority

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM

The Platteville Housing Authority administers the housing choice voucher program for the city of Platteville. The voucher program is a federal government program for assisting very low-income families, elderly and disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Funding for the program is provided by the federal government's U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The program is designed to give eligible families freedom-of-choice in finding housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual so participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

PROCESS

An applicant who meets the eligibility requirements will be placed on the waiting list until a voucher becomes available. Once an applicant is issued a voucher they are responsible for finding a rental unit within the Platteville 53818 zip code within Grant County. The owner of the unit must agree to rent under the program. Rental units must meet minimum Housing Quality Standards (HQS) of health and safety. Applicants may stay in their present unit if it passes HQS and meets the HUD payment standard guidelines. Once a unit is approved the participant pays 30-40% of their adjusted gross income for rent plus utilities, and the program pays the balance directly to the landlord/owner.
